the start

I knew when I made the decision to leave the country for 3 months, breaking the news to my family was going to be interesting. If I remotely brought up any idea like this, they would have talked me out of it.

So I decided to buy a one way plane ticket to Southeast Asia months before telling my family. Anna thought I was crazy for doing this. However, when I look back on it I got my ticket for really cheap. 

Now this is where the fun began

How was I going to break the news that I was leaving? I thought about telling them over pumpkin pie during Thanksgiving dinner. I did cross my mind to wait until Christmas morning and be like "Surprise!" I knew that would not work in my favor though.  And before you start asking why didn't I just pick up the phone and call them, I have to say if I did this, it probably would have taken 5 phone calls for everyone to hear me out. 

I did the next best thing; email. Yes, I emailed my family to let them know I'll be MIA for the first part of 2016. Some may say I'm crazy for doing this. I, on the other hand, think I'm brilliant.
